Creators Are Running Media Companies Without the Org Chart
The traditional media company existed to solve problems an individual couldn't: funding production, securing distribution, and reaching an audience at scale. Platforms have quietly solved all three for a single creator with a laptop, which means the org chart that used to be mandatory is now optional.
This doesn't make creators immune to the same pressures institutions face — audience trust still has to be earned continuously, and platform algorithm changes can cut off distribution overnight. But the leverage has shifted: a creator with a direct relationship with their audience, independent of any one platform, has a durability that a creator dependent on a single algorithm's goodwill does not.
The strategic question for any creator is the same one a media executive should ask: is the audience relationship owned, or is it rented from a platform that could change the rules tomorrow?
