We Built a Telescope to Ask One Question We Can't Fully Answer Yet
Detecting a possible biosignature — a gas combination in a distant planet's atmosphere that's hard to explain without life — sounds like it should settle the question of whether we're alone. It doesn't. Every candidate signature discovered so far has a non-biological explanation that can't yet be ruled out, and ruling it out requires more data than any current instrument, however powerful, can gather in one observation.
This is a useful case study in how frontier science actually progresses: not with a single dramatic confirmation, but with a narrowing of plausible alternative explanations over many observations, across many candidate planets, until the non-biological explanations start looking more contrived than the biological one.
The value of a telescope like this isn't that it will hand us a yes-or-no answer soon. It's that it moves the question from purely philosophical to empirically testable — which, after millennia of pure speculation, is itself the actual breakthrough.
