The Grid's Missing Piece Was Never Generation — It Was Timing
Solar and wind generate the most power exactly when demand is often lowest — midday for solar, off-peak hours for a lot of wind — and generate the least exactly when demand often peaks, in the evening. This mismatch, not a shortage of total generation capacity, is the actual core problem intermittent renewables create for a grid built around matching supply to demand in real time.
Grid-scale battery storage is the most direct fix to this specific problem: capture power when it's abundant and cheap, release it when it's scarce and expensive. It doesn't need to solve generation at all — it needs to solve timing, which is a fundamentally different and in some ways more tractable engineering problem.
Framed this way, the renewable transition's next bottleneck isn't primarily about building more solar panels or wind turbines. It's about building enough storage, fast enough, to convert an intermittent resource into something that behaves, from the grid's perspective, like reliable base-load power.
